What are dysphagia products?

In cases of ALS-related dysphagia, swallowing liquids and beverages is particularly problematic. One way to make it easier to drink fluids and prevent choking on beverages is to use thickening agents (dysphagia products).

Various manufacturers offer flavorless thickening agents that are suitable for thickening beverages. By adjusting the mixing ratio between the liquid (e.g., tea, coffee, juices, etc.) and the thickener (which comes in powder form), you can experiment to find and select the optimal consistency. The thickeners are suitable for both cold and hot liquids. They do not alter the appearance of the food. The desired consistency is achieved in just a few minutes. Therefore, providing thickened liquids is not expected to delay food intake.
