What does “treatment limitation” mean in respiratory therapy?

Respiratory therapy (including mask ventilation, cough assistance, or invasive ventilation) can prolong life and improve quality of life for some patients. The burdens associated with ventilatory therapy can be so great for an individual patient that the decision is made not to initiate ventilatory support at all (treatment limitation).
