Are there “miracles” when it comes to ALS?

Understandably, people hope for a cure—or at least a halt—to ALS. In specialized ALS centers, there are no known ALS patients who have experienced a halt, regression, or even a cure of ALS-related symptoms. In fact, there are known cases of patients who have experienced stabilization and improvement of motor symptoms. The cause was a misdiagnosis and the erroneous assumption that they had ALS.

From a long-term perspective, scientific progress and the development of effective treatment options make it conceivable—and a goal worth striving for—to halt and reverse ALS-related symptoms, but this is not yet within reach. The ultimate goal of a future cure for ALS should not be viewed as a “miracle,” but will be the result of intensive and continuous research and development efforts.
