Is vision affected by ALS?

The visual system is not affected in ALS. Vision and the visual field remain intact. Impairments may occur if the eye muscles are affected. This rare scenario occurs in people with a very long disease course or in patients who are on mechanical ventilation and have progressed beyond the typical course of the disease.

The eye movement disorder can lead to a narrowing of the visual field. Overall, however, the majority of people with ALS do not experience any impairment of their vision.
