What are the ALS requirements for an accessible apartment?
Over the long term, ALS leads to a limitation or loss of the ability to walk and stand, so the use of walkers (rollators), folding wheelchairs, or electric wheelchairs (including indoors) is to be expected.
An accessible apartment should have doorways wide enough to allow the use of an electric wheelchair in all rooms. The absence of thresholds (including those leading to patios or balconies) should, in principle, allow for the use of wheelchairs. Due to progressive arm paralysis and speech impairment, communication systems connected to the Internet are used. Therefore, an optimal Internet connection should be guaranteed at all times and should be a criterion for (communicative) accessibility. When installing door handles and window openers, compatibility with an environmental control system should be considered. Even if a person loses their manual dexterity, doors and windows can still be opened and closed independently via a “remote control” (environmental control system), provided the technical requirements are met. Eye-tracking systems may be sensitive to light during use, so the installation of (remotely controllable) blinds should be factored into the planning.
