Can I travel with a PEG tube?
Travel is possible with a PEG tube. In the first few days after PEG placement, your ability to travel may be limited because there is still a wound in the abdominal wall area and movement (such as walking, standing up, and changing positions) may cause pain. As the wound heals, these limitations will decrease, so that after four to six weeks, the PEG tube should no longer pose any restrictions on travel.
Feeding via a PEG tube requires an adequate supply of tube feeding formula, which is delivered in individual packages. When traveling, care must be taken to calculate the sufficient number of packages before departure and to bring them along. For longer trips, arrangements can be made with the nutrition teams to have the tube feed (from the manufacturer or medical supply store) shipped directly to the travel destination. This reduces the burden of transporting the formula on the patient (and family members). The change in delivery arrangements should be organized several weeks before departure so that the logistical adjustments can be implemented by all parties involved. Overall, PEG feeding is well compatible with travel.
