What medications can be used to treat airway narrowing?
Excessive saliva production (sialorrhea) in the oral cavity and throat can be treated with secretion-inhibiting medications (e.g., amitriptyline, scopolamine, pirenzepine, atropine). Treating bronchial secretion is more difficult. One possible treatment option is the administration of butylscopolamine (via subcutaneous injection or infusion therapy). In cases of severe secretion, it may also be helpful to use morphine-based analgesics to mask the distressing sensation of secretion buildup—even if removal of the secretion is not possible.
