How long does a PEG tube last?
A PEG tube is made of plastic that is very sturdy and durable. When used correctly, a PEG tube can be used for several years without needing to be replaced.
Despite this general durability, the tube system may experience “wear and tear,” which can lead to brittleness, particularly in areas subject to mechanical stress (such as kinks in the tube or frequent handling). If brittleness occurs at the end of the tube, these sections can be cut off, allowing the PEG tube to be reinserted.
The assessment of the PEG tube and the decision regarding any adjustments to the tube should be made by a physician with experience in handling PEG tubes or by a nutrition team that specializes in PEG therapy. If the PEG tube shows significant wear and tear—particularly if the plastic begins to become brittle—it may need to be replaced. In most cases, this requires another gastroscopy as part of inpatient treatment. This situation occurs very rarely. For the majority of ALS patients, a single inpatient procedure is necessary to place the PEG tube, which can then be used for several years without needing to be replaced.
