Can exposure to amalgam cause ALS?

There is no known link between amalgam and ALS. A possible link has been suspected and discussed for several decades in connection with the “toxin hypothesis.” Amalgam, an alloy of mercury and other metals, is not capable of triggering the degeneration of motor neurons. In practice, there are numerous ALS patients who (against medical advice) have had their amalgam fillings completely removed without any discernible change in the course of their disease. The use of amalgam in dentistry has declined significantly due to the adoption of newer materials and plastics, rendering this unfounded hypothesis increasingly irrelevant.
