Are there differences in the prevalence of ALS in Germany?
Within Germany, there are no known significant differences in incidence, such as a north-south or east-west gradient. There is no regional risk in the sense of a geographic clustering. The first systematic ALS registry in Germany examines the “Swabia” region in the states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. This shows that there is no completely “uniform distribution” of ALS incidence. For example, some municipalities have a higher incidence of ALS, while others (even in the immediate vicinity) have a lower incidence. The causes of this are still largely unknown. In addition to statistical uneven distribution, methodological effects must also be considered. Overall, these regional and local differences are relatively minor.
