What is the cause of death in ALS?

ALS leads to a shortened life span or the need for life-prolonging measures. Two factors can limit life expectancy: swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) and the associated malnutrition, as well as impaired respiratory function (hypoventilation). Both of these life-limiting factors can generally be delayed or managed through medical interventions. The effects of dysphagia can be mitigated with a feeding tube (PEG), while impaired respiratory function can be treated with ventilator therapy.
