Is there a standstill in ALS research?

A prolonged period of stability in the course of ALS is not typical. Over a 12-month assessment period, disease progression is evident in all ALS patients, even in cases of very slow-progressing forms of the disease. A patient was being treated at Charité who had lived with ALS for 56 years without “artificial” nutrition or ventilation (this unusual course of the disease was published in 2004 in the neurological journal“Neurology”). Even in this patient with an extremely slow disease progression, a slight progression of symptoms was detectable—the ALS never stood still.
