Do I need a primary care physician for ALS treatment?

A network of various doctors is necessary to ensure optimal care. The primary care physician is an important partner due to their proximity to the patient’s home, availability, and familiarity with the patient. This also applies to local specialists in neurology (and other fields). Neurologists at specialized ALS centers (which are usually not located in the immediate vicinity of the patient’s home) collaborate with the primary care physician and local neurologists. In particular, pulmonologists and gastroenterologists may be involved in respiratory and nutritional therapy, respectively. In certain situations, physicians with additional training in palliative care are also involved.
