What is “sporadic” ALS?

“Sporadic” ALS is the medical term for ALS that occurs without any apparent family history. The term “sporadic” can be translated as “isolated” or “scattered.” Sporadic ALS is assumed in 90–95% of all ALS patients. The exact percentage of sporadic ALS compared to familial ALS may change as scientific understanding evolves. However, it is generally undisputed that ALS is predominantly a sporadic disease.
