How can a bladder disorder be treated?

Difficulties with urinary control can arise from two distinct situations. Often, these are caused by mobility limitations that make it difficult or time-consuming to reach the restroom. In such cases, protective underwear or urinary condoms (for men) are used. In cases of severe mobility limitations, the insertion of a urinary catheter (through the urethra or through the abdominal wall) may also be necessary and advisable under certain circumstances. In particular, the decision to insert a catheter must be weighed and decided upon during a doctor-patient consultation after evaluating the benefits and risks (urinary tract infections).

In addition to mobility limitations (with their indirect consequences for urinary control), ALS can also lead to motor bladder dysfunction. This can result from spasticity (increased muscle tone) of the pelvic floor, which in turn can lead to a delay in bladder emptying. In this scenario, treatment with medications that reduce pelvic floor tone is possible. The most commonly used medication is oxybutynin, which is taken in tablet form several times a day.

The fundamental decision regarding medication, the choice of medications, and the dosage are determined through a dialogue between the doctor and the patient.
