In what situations is oxygen therapy appropriate?
The administration of oxygen (via a “nasal cannula”) can have a positive effect on breathing effort. Oxygen therapy, which can also be administered at home using an oxygen tank, increases blood oxygen saturation, reduces any sensation of shortness of breath and labored breathing, and alleviates respiratory strain.
As a result, a dual effect may occur (as with the administration of morphine and benzodiazepines). Oxygen therapy can also lead to a reduction in respiratory function and thus a shortening of the remaining lifespan. This life-shortening effect must be deliberately considered as part of a palliative care plan in order to alleviate distressing symptoms.
