What is a compression stocking?

Lymph edema may develop in the arms and legs as a result of the paresis. Lymph edema is visible as swelling of the hands, lower legs, and feet.

Manual lymphatic drainage is the primary form of treatment for reducing lymphedema. It is a specialized form of physical therapy in which manual pressure and bandaging techniques are used to “squeeze” tissue fluid from the extremities toward the trunk.

In addition to manual lymphatic drainage, compression stockings for the legs (and, less commonly, compression gloves) are used to prevent the re-accumulation of tissue fluid (“lymph”).

Compression stockings (orthopedic stockings) are medical devices made of a “two-way stretch material.” These are knitted stockings that allow for both longitudinal and transverse stretching. In the past, these knitted stockings were made of natural fibers; today, they are mostly manufactured from fully synthetic fibers.

Compression stockings are available by doctor’s prescription through medical supply stores, orthopedic workshops, or pharmacies that specialize in treating lymphedema. Compression stockings are customized to the individual’s body measurements (even as these change over the course of the disease).

Putting on and taking off compression stockings requires training, manual dexterity, and strength, so family members or caregivers must be involved in the process.

The proper use of compression stockings is an effective treatment method for reducing the development of lymphedema. Compression stockings are usually used in combination with manual lymphatic drainage and positioning techniques (elevating the extremities during periods of physical rest).
